Sometimes my work goes easily, while at other times pieces fight tooth and nail right up to the end. This particular piece fought me for months where it has sat on a shelf taken down from time to time for an occasional Skirmish (hence it’s name). The funny thing is that the shape of Skirmish changed even at the latest point during the application of the logo. Fortunately, at each step of the way the tamper only got better.

One might think that the more complex shapes pose the greatest challenges, but the opposite is often true with the simplest shapes being the most demanding. There is less distraction allowing the eye to more critically assess form and flow. With a sleek shape like Skirmish’s there is nowhere to hide. I think that the photos bear testament to the fact that the effort was worth it. Thankfully Caneel puts on a very nice show for a rather narrow piece. It’s going to be a great fit in any bowl. As always, non-metallic tipped tampers are not for picking at ashes. I make other tampers for that.
